The Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience is a rite of passage for each child and family, and a celebration for the community as well. Our community treats its young people with respect and encourages them to regard their Jewish commitment seriously.
At Shaarei Tikvah, every child shines alone on this special day. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah marks the point at which boys and girls take on adult Jewish responsibility – Each child is expected to have:
- Completed an approved course of study, either at Shaarei Tikvah’s religious school, a Hebrew Day School or other institution
- A sound reading knowledge of Hebrew (especially prayer book Hebrew)
- Knowledge of Torah and prayer, Jewish holidays, history and values, and appreciation for Israel.
We will happily work with families of children with special needs to design a meaningful experience for the child and family.
An easy to read handbook is available for all synagogue members to assist families in navigating the details of the Bar/Bat mitzvah process.
We encourage both members and non-members of our community to consider holding their simcha in our beautiful sanctuary/social hall. Please see the Facilities section for details.
